President's Message
Gentlemen,
This is my last official email to you. As of today you
have a new slate of officers (2- new and 2 –old) to
serve you. It has been my pleasure and honor to have
served you during the past three years. Please continue
to support your officers and our tournaments as you have
done.
The banquet was a rousing success. We had 106 attendees
– 57 SMGA members and 49 member guests. The food was
great! I heard a number of people say how much they
enjoyed the Blacken Tilapia and Crusted Pork Loin. I
personally enjoyed the Louisiana Bread Pudding.
Ø Matt Mitchell talked briefly on how much the SMGA
means to the Club – we are a valuable asset. Matt
informed us that The Hills Course was voted as the Best
Golf Course in McKinney for 2011. Great job was done by
Robey Canaday and his maintenance staff keeping the
course in its present condition considering the summer
we had.
Ø Our SMGA webmaster, Jerry Obenour, was recognized
for the great job that he does. Our website (www.smgahills.com)
is unique among all other clubs. We are indeed lucky to
have such a talented person in our organization. Don
Weiland presented a couple of tokens of our appreciation
to Jerry.
Ø Bill Uhlemann gave an update on our membership.
The year ended with 99 players with 13 new members
added. Several members have left during the course of
the year most due to either moving from the area or
declining health. Two members will soon be leaving us –
Bill Cross and John Proctor, as they are leaving the
area. We will miss all of our former members.
Denny Wiseman updated us on the Interclub and Tin Cup
tournaments.
Interclub participation was down a little from the
previous year, but our performance was better. In those
Interclub tournaments where Match Play was competed, our
SMGA teams were undefeated. Denny announced that for
next year Prestonwood has invited all of the interclub
groups to participate in a kick-off tournament at their
Lakes Course. Each Club will send 20 players to
participate. Your new Interclub Director, Larry Elsey,
will provide more information as plans are developed.
Tin Cup Tournament with Eldorado will be held on Oct
25&26. The Tin Cup Team is still in the formative stage.
Preliminary team members are:
John Brockett, Stan Chavez, John Dell’Antonia, Bob
Donley, Don Holec, Jerry Kirby, Mike Koch, Marc Lowrance,
Jim Mangham Morris Paulk, Larry Robicheaux, Dick
Schlough, Frank Stark, Earl Tanner, Robert Wantland, Don
Weiland, co-captains Larry Elsey and Larry Christensen,
and captain – Denny Wiseman
Ø Don Weiland reviewed upcoming tournaments and
presented prize money ($25) to CTP winners in the SMGA
Championship Tournament. Ron Leonard was recognized for
his hole-in-one made on Hole No. 15 during Thursday’s
tournament play. Ron was presented $310 from the SMGA
Hole-in-One Club.
Ø Our super Grand Seniors, age 80+, were recognized.
The Club provided a complimentary lunch ticket to each
member of the group.
Ø SMGA Match Play Tournament winners and runner-ups
were recognized. This year’s overall Match Play Champion
is Earl Tanner.
Ø SMGA Championship Tournament – this year we had 58
players (50 from the White tees and 8 from the Gold
tees). Our Gold Tee program continues to get stronger
and is fully supported by our membership. This year’s
flight winners were recognized (Mike Koch, Jerry Kirby,
Dick Melby, Earl Tanner, Howard Hupp, and Howard Hazlett).
Our SMGA Champion is Earl Tanner with a net score of
133.
Ø Player of the Year plaques were presented -
Grand Senior POY (age 72+) – Earl Tanner
Super Senior POY (age 68-71) – Stan Chavez (unable to
attend)
Senior POY (age 67 & below) – Larry Christensen (unable
to attend)
Earl Tanner with his Match Play Champion, SMGA Champion
& Grand Senior POY plagues.
This was truly the year of Earl Tanner – winning every
award that he was eligible. However, his POY award was
not determined until the last day of the SMGA
Championship Tournament. He and Howard Hazlett were neck
and neck until then – only 3 points separated them going
into the tournament.
Ø
Your 2011-12 SMGA officers were introduced – Bill
Uhlemann (Secretary / Treasurer), Don Weiland
(Tournament Director), Larry Elsey (Vice-President &
Interclub Tournament Director), and Larry Christensen
(President).
Regards,
Larry
